When someone has been part of an organization for nearly a decade, it’s impossible to capture their impact in a few paragraphs. But as Dr. Martha I. Martinez begins a new professional chapter, we wanted to pause and simply say thank you.

Martha joined SEAL in 2017, and over the past nine years she has helped shape who we are as an organization. Her work strengthened our research, deepened our understanding of impact, and helped ensure that everything we do remains grounded in evidence and in service of multilingual learners.

She stepped into leadership of SEAL’s 12-district external evaluation in partnership with the Center for Equity for English Learners (CEEL) at Loyola Marymount University and collaborated with CEEL and  Los Angeles Unified on multi-year evaluation projects, while also developing and implementing SEAL’s internal evaluation tools. Those systems have become an important part of how we learn, improve, and demonstrate the impact of our work.

Martha also helped elevate SEAL’s presence within the research community. She built trusted relationships, collaborated with researchers and education leaders across the state, and represented SEAL on advisory groups, committees, conference panels, webinars, and presentations. Wherever she went, she brought a thoughtful perspective and an unwavering belief that multilingual learners deserve learning environments that recognize their strengths, languages and cultures as assets.

Within our leadership team, Martha was someone who asked important questions, challenged our thinking, and continually encouraged us to keep equity and belonging at the center of our work. Her perspective helped shape many of the conversations that continue to guide SEAL today.

What we’ll remember most, though, is Martha’s quiet commitment to doing meaningful work. She never sought the spotlight. Instead, she focused on helping us ask better questions, use data more intentionally, and make decisions that would ultimately benefit students, educators, and families.

As Martha begins her next adventure, we know she will continue to make a difference. While we’ll certainly miss her knowledge, leadership, and partnership, we’re equally excited to see where her journey takes her next.

On behalf of everyone at SEAL, thank you, Martha, for nine years of dedication, collaboration, and advocacy for multilingual learners. Your contributions have left a lasting mark on our organization, and we’re grateful to have been part of your journey.

We wish you every success in this next chapter and look forward to cheering you on along the way.
