About the Event
Debates about technology in the classroom aren’t new, but AI has made them more urgent. The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading has identified technology-enhanced teaching and learning as one of its “big bet worthy” strategies and has devoted several GLR Learning Tuesdays to exploring what makes technology effective for English language learners, students who learn differently, and other populations most impacted by learning loss.
Amidst this look into the ways technology enhances learning, CGLR has also deeply examined the guardrails and guidelines needed to keep children safe and to ensure tools like AI are used appropriately and effectively. Neuroscientist and educator Jared Cooney Horvath’s new book, The Digital Delusion: How Classroom Technology Harms Our Kids’ Learning—and How to Help Them Thrive Again, takes the guardrails a step further, arguing that widespread use of laptops, tablets, and classroom software is undermining how children learn. Still, Horvath says, “This is not a call to reject technology. It’s a call to reclaim real learning.”
Join us for a book talk with Horvath followed by a panel discussion of experts in childhood development and classroom technology who will take on the debate: Can technology be an asset for elementary students rather than a hindrance? If yes, how?
